What About Other Interactive Video Solutions?

Embedded Hot Spots

Embedding hot spots in video was the original solution to making video “interactive”. Just as it sounds, a programmer or program must embed code into the actual video in order to activate commands from a uniquely designed player. While this method can create similar consumer experiences as the VidClx system is burdened with inherent scalability and cost issues the publisher must distribute the entire embedded video requiring all the hardware and bandwidth required to deliver video. It creates digital rights issues because in order to modify the video and broadcast it you must have the rights to do so. This solution has seen slow adoption from the producers and advertising community, mainly due to these cost and scalability issues

Overlay Technology

Overlay uses another independently produced film layer to add content to existing video. Once produced an overlaid video can be designed to deliver many forms of interactive content- whether it be dynamic or static. While this method has greater flexibility across platforms and players as the actual video is not altered, it has most of the cost and scalability issues associated with embedding. Immense production time is spent to make these overlays and it still requires significant hardware and network resources to deliver. Dynamic Overlay is somewhat more elegant and similar to VidClx, but its HTTP based interface requires greater infrastructure than VidClx’s C++ cloud based service. The HTTP interface also limits the functionality of the service as it relates to back end data collection and delivery of services.
